“Some old-fashioned things like fresh air and sunshine are hard to beat”. Laura Ingalls Wilder.
There is little else quite as peaceful as long and sunny afternoon walks in the countryside wouldn’t you agree? The days when you just turn a blind eye to all the little daily stresses, switch off your phone and just take a breath, surrounded by nature and fresh air and trees! I do love trees.
This past weekend I had a little stroll around Leith Hill. Embedded in the Surrey Hills, Leith Hill provides beautiful woodland walks and spectacular panoramic views at the top of Leith Tower. The top of the tower is actually the highest point in South-East England! At the top of the tower you are actually standing taller than London’s Shard building!
Leith Tower, part of the National Trust, was built by Richard Hull in 1765 as ‘a place for people to enjoy the glory of the English countryside’.
The woodland surrounding Leith Hill is also so peaceful and pretty! Rays of golden sun were twinkling through the tree canopies illuminating the leaves and making them extra green and vibrant, the weather was mild and calm and the birds were happily twittering away in the treetops! It was like spring had already arrived!
You get to the top of the tower by climbing the teeniest most tightly spiraling staircase I have ever seen!! I definitely got jelly legs on the way down!! (It’s not scary I’m just pathetic haha!) until you emerge through a tiny medieval door to breathtaking panoramic views of the patchwork yellow and green fields of the Surrey Hills!
A rooftop telescope also makes the most of the stunning views and on a clear day you can see all the way to London! Half way up the staircase there is also another little room that has facts and history about Leith Tower. My favorite fact was that the last sighting of the Surrey Puma was at Leith Hill in 1987!
Naturally the only thing to do after a lazy Saturday afternoon stroll is to find some sort of tea room! So that’s exactly what I did! And did I find a cute one!!
I went to The Lavender Goose in Gomshall, not a 10 minute drive from Leith Hill. It’s a cafe/ home store with the cutest bits and bobs, trinkets, candles and cards, big beautiful lanterns and ornaments for your home! The tables are also cutely mismatched next to beautiful big bay windows and vintage looking lamp shades! So cute! Their menu also offers the choice of lots of deliciousness such as hot sandwiches, soups, breakfasts, brunches and most importantly, CAKE!! Haha! Pretty much my perfect day!
So here are a few snaps from this lovely lazy Saturday afternoon, I hope you like them!! If you are near Surrey area I would definitely recommend a trip to Leith Hill! Absolutely beautiful views!
